Thanks Otto.  Just to add to that for my Mini with a Dell 1704FPV over
DVI the magic words were:
        Option     "MonitorLayout"              "None,TMDS"
        Option     "IgnoreEDID"                 "on"
        Option     "NoDDC"                      "on"
