Hello.

I am going through the OBSD documentation pretty methodically here. I don't remember seeing an answer to this one, although I imagine it is an easy one for an experienced OBSD user.

I installed 3.6. I Am following the patch branch, so I got my ports tree, recompiled my kernel, my userland utilities and X. Now it is time to install gnome (and many other applications).

The documentation is very clear that above all you should keep you system in sync: your kernel, your userland utilities, your ports and your X. So, my question is this: Do I now have to stick with my new ports tree for every package I install, or can I still use the precompiled binaries? I see two possible answers here:

1) No way you bone head! You are going to pull you system out of sync if you use release packages with your stable system! You must use ports!

2) Of course you can silly! That is the whole point! It is only the rest of the system that has to stay in sync; precompiled binary packages don't factor into the equation of keeping a synced system!

Cuz, it seems strange to me that it is *so* important to keep your ports tree in sync, and then turn around and use procompiled binaries made with an older version of ports! This is the source of my confusion.

Anyone?

Thanks.

Chris
