This processor is definitely supported.  I have several systems using
these and another VIA processors, and have had no such problems.

As others have said, this sounds like a hardware problem: either
overheating, memory problems (try memtest86 to look for these) or some
other hardware fault.

The fact that you see similar problems on FreeBSD and plan9 should be
some indicator that it might be a hardware problem...  And in OpenBSD,
we try hard to make sure that you don't need to fiddle with knobs to
be able to compile on a wide range of hardware.
