Marc,

Startkde has been a very useful program for me.
I've used it continuously for almost 3 years, going
back to when I was first learning how to use ppp
over dialup as my internet connection after I switched
to OpenBSD from Windows. 

I think xdm/startkde (and Xnest) may do the job for me.
