So far, Silicon Image SiI 3112 and 3114 model controllers seem to work fine for me. In the Netherlands, they are available for about 35 to 40 euro (unit price, SiI 3112). That was a local shop; possibly there are other vendors that offer lower prices. I recommend checking for those chipsets when purchasing.
