I use remote IP KVM to do my upgrades. Occasionally, I can't get my keybord input to get boot bsd.rd fast enough, so I just replace bsd with bsd.rd and reboot. Voila! I get bsd.rd without a hitch. If that were to be a problem, I can just kick down to shell, mv bsd back and reboot. All works just fine.
