Did you build 4.9 from source? If not, you are already using downloaded 
binaries.
Building ports is good for checking if your hardware is sound.
Building ports on -current is useful for modifying a port or adding a new port 
to ports tree.
Building ports are also for adding programs/etc that do not have binaries.
You could also build ports on 4.9 if you are customizing a port just for your 
needs.
