I have recently tried out 5.2 on a slightly dated hardware (nvidia based,

view. I tried changing settings in pf, cache, network cards etc but had to
go back to 5.1. It seems there is some I/O problem with 5.2.

Can you try a -current snapshot to see if the many fixes have helped the
situation?

5.2 added multi-core support to pthreads, so if it's a multi-core
machine then your threaded apps should run better. There may be other
new additions that help too.
If you want to use OpenBSD as a desktop, running x11 applications like
Seamonkey, you should run -current snapshots, and upgrade to the newest
snapshot each time your apps have an upgrade. The -stable ports are not
maintained enough.
