Changing my .cshrc to define AUTOMAKE_VERSION 1.11 instead of 1.11.5 and rebooting cured the problem. Not sure why since I don't have 1.11.0 installed. I have 1.10.3p6, 1.11.5p1, 1.9.6p10. Oh well.
