MTP is crap: it's slow, it can lead to corrupted files, and
according to supposedly knowledgeable people, that can be traced to
the protocol itself. Anyway, just about anything is better than it in
practice.
The easy solution is CIFS: either install Samba Filesharing on
your phone then export /sdcard and mount it on OpenBSD with Samba, or
export a directory from your computer with Samba and mount it on your
phone with one of the many file managers than can do SMB (f.i. ES File
Explorer, or Total Commander with the LAN plugin).
If you want encryption things involve slightly more work. There are
various SFTP and FTPS Android apps, and even a plain rsync over SSH, but
you'll typically need to convert SSH keys between openssh and putty's
formats (which you can do with puttygen).
