I've used pkg_check(8) successfully on a couple of occations when
pkg_add appeared to make a mess. However, the man page states: "Work in
progress. The order of checks is not definitive, and more checks may be
added. Use with caution". It's not apparent what to be cautious about.
Perhaps the man page is a candidate for review? It's from February 11,
2014.
