The issue referred to in that thread (boot hangs if there is no monitor) is common to many Shuttles. I experience the same thing on a Shuttle SD11G5, which is about 10 years old.
I believe the problem at the BIOS level, not something you can work around in the OS. It's 100% consistent - if there is no monitor plugged in, no boot. The dummy plug may be a solution if you want it to run headless.
