Like you have mentioned, the connector on the motherboard is a mini PCI Express one and these are not necessarily compatible with mSATA - they share the same form factor and only some will support an mSATA drives[0]. You'll need to check with ASUS as they might have some sort of compatibility list akin to, i.e. intel's[1].
