For my upgrade from 5.6 to 5.7 on a laptop without CD reader, I got bsd.rd and put it at /bsd.57.rd on the machine to upgrade. Then on the prompt at early boot, I typed "boot bsd.57.rd" instead of waiting for the machine to boot. Just like instructed in the upgrade page of the FAQ.
