My opinion: this would be useful to a lot of people, but don't expect help from upstream. Things like the lack of Linux capabilities would make it harder to gracefully manage WiFi etc. I'm not sure whether these are solved problems. We already have stable GNOME and XFCE ports, so there's an easy entry point. Alternatively, you could make a custom environment like Crunchbang.
