Hi Lawrence, > Does OpenBSD support PCIe SSDs? I'm talking about the non-SATA variants > specifically.
PCIe SSDs come in (at least two) variants. The ones that implement an AHCI standard controller work. Those that implement the newer NVMe standard don't work yet. In principle the NVMe controllers should be a bit faster, but even the ones with an AHCI controller are incredibly fast. Much faster than a SATA SSD. > If it supports them, will it install onto them and will it boot from them? That depends. If the device has a boot ROM, it should work as long as your BIOS looks for it. That isn't always the case on laptops. But if it works with otherOSes, it should work with OpenBSD. > An example: > http://www.ebuyer.com/706527-hyperx-predator-240gb-gen2-x4-pcie-hhhl-ssd-shpm2280p2h-240g Doesn't specify whether it is AHCI or NVMe unfortunately. Says it uses a Marvell Controller. Those tend to be quirky. The Samsung SM951 that shows up on that page does work very well with OpenBSD. Double the size for only 50 quid more. Perhaps you can get a 256GB version for a similar price as the HyperX Predator.
