We don't know.  For any of these platforms.

If we knew what specific pins did -- for certain -- there would
be a driver using them.

I think the entire subsystem is misnamed.  They are not general
purpose pins.  They are SPECIAL PURPOSE pins, hooked up to WTF
knows what.  Not general purpose at all.

If we had hardware where we knew for CERTAIN that a block of pins
were ONLY wired to specific a specific "general-purpose" header on
the board -- fine.  But we don't know, on nearly every platform with
this retarded featureset.

Frankly, if those drivers were removed, very few people would
miss them.  And fewer people would be tempted to fry their boards.

Now you have potentially half-fried your board.  Will you file
bug reports in the future for things you observe on that machine?

I could go on for a while, but I'll let this sit for consideration..
