I tried a suggestion from Gregor Best on a different thread https://marc.info/?l=openbsd-misc&m=149229853815568&w=2
I reinstalled 6.1, but booting via UEFI this time. Using the wsfb driver like it says in that thread worked for me. I am not sure if I could have got my original "bios" install booting without a reinstall. Or why vesa did not work. But I got a solution for X now.
