The Welsh-English Dictionary gives

cwm 1. valley n.m.

My Geography teacher taught us many years ago that it especially
referred to a valley created by glaciation scooping out a mountain
side. It is related to the English place names ending in coombe or
combe, such as Ilfracombe.
