Thanks to all who replied off-list for their assistance.
For the archives, I was doing many things wrong, but by using the
supplied ISO from the 3.9-BETA snapshot - rather than rolling my own
which I was previously doing - the iMac G4 booted & installed 3.9-
BETA without issue.
