Googling for openbsd writes_to_home points to bsd.port.mk, and the env
PORTHOME for which the manpage of bsd.port.mk
says:
    PORTHOME
             Setting of env variable HOME for most shell invocations.  Default
             will trip ports that try to write into $HOME while building.
