Check if the MTU is causing issues, sometimes VPNs (which lower the MTU of the link) cause the effect that pings and "small" traffic works, but when you do SSH or SSL and it sends large pubkeys or large lists of possible crypto algs, the packets suddenly get too large to work, and then it freezes. -- May the most significant bit of your life be positive.
