If you are not starting X, this is enough:

$ cat /etc/wsconsctl.conf 
display.screen_off=10
display.vblank=on
display.kbdact=on
display.msact=on
display.outact=off

display.kbdact if set to on, keyboard activity will unblank the screen.

cause many monitors to go into an energy saver mode.
