You are talking about "hosting infrastructure" but can you confirm that you are 
not working
locally with QEMU on your pc ?

Linux or OpenBSD QEMU vm hardware configuration is a strange beast to 
addomesticate.
Firstly you should investigate further how to manage your vm configuration file.
Ie. it should be something possible to set your disk preferences to Sata drive.
