In that light I tend to recommend Aruba IAP-305, one of the APs gets elected to 
be the controller and software updates are still happening. There are plenty to 
be found on eBay, last time a checked, for a decent price. 

I also like the OpenWRT One suggestion. No  experience  myself yet, worth 
giving that a go.
