One of the first things I do on a new installation is copy my .fvwmrc file from a USB stick to ~/. I have always found it useful to have a fully functional windowed environment right out of the box. Of course, I might later install a more complex desktop environment, but I have always been extremely grateful to have fvwm available, especially in situations where I may not yet have my network set up. (I also keep wifi drivers on that USB stick.)
