I didn't realise that was the case but you are correct!

i386 seems to be a good start it seems - upon some searching around and with 
some pointers from brynet@ I  I installed i386 from CD. It runs well. However I 
would love to be able to take advantage of the underlying amd64 architecture. 
Bryan suggested booting i386 but hotswapping to the amd64 disc early on. So I 
am now off to buy some DVD's as the amd64 install77.iso doesn't actually fit on 
a CD!
