I've dug out the log, it was for 1 & 4bit grayscale. I've tested your Xephyr in linux and it certainly works as announced Crystal.

So is 1 and 4 bit greyscale meant to work if the hardware allows it, or is the bare minimum 8 bit now? Which would be understandable.

Also I agree that "warm" or "red" mode is preferable for evening use of screens, no need for grayscale for that. Been using it for a decade, it helps a lot. Found many a relative who hadn't heard of it and were suffering from related sleep issues.

It certainly does work.  But it depends on the underlying graphics driver.
