That doesn't sound like an X11 configuration problem.
By the way, on a machine with this hardware spec, modern browsers such as
chrome and firefox are probably going to be slow. You might want to install
something like 'surf' to use alongside them for browsing sites that don't
specifically require one of the larger browsers.

Try increasing limits in /etc/login.conf, especially for staff, and
add yourself to the staff group. That will probably help.
