So having a crappy or blobbed driver is better than having nothing?

Give me something that works or nothing at all. I prefer to not be surprised by "it sort of works for the developer of the driver".

I find this statement rather misleading and wonder why people keep parroting it.

Agreed. More folks should hang out on the Dell/Linux mailing list and take note of the pain these people endure with binary and poorly- written drivers. Sensors and hardware RAID are particularly ugly.
