I'm sorry, I've gotten a bit confused as to just which /etc/X11/xorg.conf
and which set of xinput devices you were sugesting for the next round of
tests.

I tried some tests using

        Identifier "TrackPoint and buttons"

        Option "AutoServerLayout" "true"

--- end /etc/X11/xorg.conf ---

For each of the following tests I restarted the X server via 'pkill X'
in a root shell.

One curious thing I noticed is that with the above /etc/X11/xorg.conf,
after I restart the X server xenodm immediately displays its usual
background stipple pattern, but xenodm does *not* display the usual
OpenBSD login dialog box -- that doesn't appear until I move the touchpad.

Anyway, once I move the cursor, the login dialog box appears, and I
login as my usual account (which starts ctwm as a window manager), in
these tests /dev/wsmouse2 never appears in the `xinput list` output, only
  /dev/wsmouse
  /dev/wsmouse0
  /dev/wsmouse1

If (using the above /etc/X11/xorg.conf)
I enable only wsmouse0 (wsmouse and wsmouse1 disabled)
then the cursor ALWAYS jumps, but the touchpad buttons are ok.

If (using the above /etc/X11/xorg.conf)
I enable only wsmouse (wsmouse0 and wsmouse1 disabled)
then the cursor ALWAYS jumps, but the touchpad buttons are ok.

If (using the above /etc/X11/xorg.conf)
I enable only wsmouse1 (wsmouse and wsmouse0 disabled)
then the touchpad doesn't work (can't move the cursor at all)
and the touchpad buttons are ok.

If (using the above /etc/X11/xorg.conf)
I enable any two of {wsmouse, wsmouse0, wsmouse1},
then the cursor ALWAYS jumps, and the touchpad buttons are ok.

I neglected to try the trackpoint ("nipple") in these tests.
