When first configured, AMI/LSI MegaRAID (at least 300-8x with
813F f/w) init's the array in the background (incidentally,
during this time one can't upgrade the firmware, so if bringing
up a box it may be useful to do the firmware first to avoid
waiting or later reboots). bioctl doesn't indicate that this
is happening, the drives are just shown as being online.
On a new Supermicro H8SSL-i with MegaRAID SATA 300-8x when this
was happening, I found that i386 GENERIC, amd64 GENERIC and
GENERIC.MP were very slow, top showed high CPU time in interrupt,
vmstat showed 80000+ int/sec, systat vmstat didn't show any
device with high interrupt rate (nic, ami, rtc all consistent
with the load on the box at the time).
At this time, i386 GENERIC.MP was working normally (low cpu, etc).
Now the array is initialised, things are as I'd expect.
I wondered whether this was expected, and also I wanted to get
something in the archives for anyone who searches for it later.
I'd rather not run the init again, but could do if it would help
someone who wants to look into it..
