The most common one I used to see was just an army of zombies
sending enough data and packets per second to blow the target out
of the water, usually taking the slower access routers of the radar in
the process.


what countermeasures can i take against such an attack?



If you have a site that you expect to be hit by DDOS attacks and need to be
able
to handle them you need to have your site on a network than can handle them
and preferrably clean the traffic within their network before sending it
down to you.

A lot of the DDOS I used to see was completed by the provider black-holing
the target
to protect the other customers in the network. A few of the attacks were
more clever
than just aiming at a customers site and also took out ISP infrastructure
like dns where
the domains were handled.
