You're correct on not getting redirected to spamd. However, such a
setup will only work on networks that do not block outbound
connections to port 25.

Mail submission (port 587) is a different service than mail delivery
(port 25). I'd recommend people just bite the bullet and phase out
port 25 for mail submission. It'll save you spurious reports from
remote users. Over time, it will save those users a good deal of grief
as well.
