No, but I can add a different experience: I upgraded one of my boxes
from 3.8-stable straight to a pre-hackathon -current using
autoconfigured RAID (but not root-on-RAID), and Everything Just Worked.
(Though upgrading the ports was a little problematic.)

If you mark the root drive as autoconfiguring but not auto-rooting,
does the same error occur?
