I decided to give trunk(4) a second shot, and this time I noticed that while I was running ping(1) if I plugged in em0, pings would start sending out over the ethernet cable correctly, but my AP was still directing responses back over the wireless network (which trunk(4) was ignoring). A firmware upgrade fixed the AP's switching behavior, and now trunk(4) seems to be working fine.
