no, some laptops have software-controlled switches to turn the radio on and off. sometimes they are separate buttons, sometimes they are key combinations. this is not the same thing as `ifconfig up' etc. some notebooks are badged, so it may be worth invesigating whether any of the drivers at http://damien.bergamini.free.fr/ipw/download.html might be of use.
