can you work something out other than pptp here? I don't think
this (alcatel doing pppoa/pppoe->pptp and openbsd doing pptp) is
going to do great things for performance. If your ISP supports
pppoe, you can try reconfiguring the modem as a bridge, and
setup OpenBSD using in-kernel pppoe(4) [not userland pppoe(8)]

I don't remember what the pptp conversion does to maximum
packet sizes, but it may be worth dropping max-mss too (maybe
"scrub in max-mss 1400" as a starting point).

duplex ok on this link? (if it's an older Alcatel the only
option is probably half-duplex, in which case the best bet is
probably to leave the soekris at half-duplex)

btw, net.inet.tcp.{send,recv}space doesn't apply to routed
packets, it only helps with packets to/from the router itself.
