ess(4)'s have always treated me well.

good luck plugging one into your pci slot.  there's quite a difference
between what's supported and what you can buy.  all the new sound
drivers supported integrated sound, not addon cards.

for example, best buy sells 7 "sound cards".  one is a usb audio, one
is possibly supported by emu (with no way to control the volume), 4
are probably not supported, and i don't even know if the 7th is a
sound card or not.
