It might be relevant to know what you were running before, and perhaps
worth trying with a newer/older kernel (built on another box; do not trust
binaries built on the box itself behaving like this)

How was this captured? I've seen corrupted characters like this over
plaintext transfers (e.g. ftp, smtp) with a nic that was having trouble
(newer pci-x quad em(4) in H8SSL boards before I learned to force the
pci-x speed to 66).
