Nice section actually -- I just used the trial and error way of getting
it right, as I hadn't discovered that section of the manual.

As the OP now have got some useful answers, I'll diverge a bit from the
original subject. Darren, Jason, and Steffen: Do any of you use
ssh-based virtual private networks?

I don't use any ssh-based vpns, given the caveat listed at the bottom
of the mentioned section my needs are more for a VPN of permanent
nature. Also, the cases I would have the most use for them would be
when interconnecting non Unix-based clients to my home network, and to
my knowledge there's no (free) Windows-based SSH client that supports
SSH virtual network tunnels. For those instances I've gone with
OpenVPN. (I wonder if Cygwin would make this possible? tun(4)
allocation under Cygwin I haven't yet explored.)
