The "modem" is just an interface between phone line and the soundcard. Signal processing is done on the host CPU. As an aside, that's why you can't use the modem; open-source soft DSPs are pretty limited, I only know of spandsp and that doesn't do better than v.29. Faster modem protocols are, aiui, still quite patent-encumbered.
