I believe this isn't so hard. :-) I've narrowed the situation down to the kernel I use. GENERIC does not cause any freezes, with or without shared memory increased. GENERIC.MP does freeze very reliably, but it does seem somewhat (though probably only incidently) related to the Shared Memeory size (kern.shminfo.shmall or whatever it is).
