Hi there,

I suspect that the harddrive in my new Thinkpad T61p (dmesg below) is
failing, so I tried to examine its SMART statistics. I encountered two
problems. I'm using OpenBSD 4.2-RELEASE (amd64).

The first problem was that I couldn't get atactl to work. The command:

# atactl sd0c smartstatus

results in:

atactl: ATAIOCCOMMAND failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device

I searched for this error message on Google and the archives of this list,
but couldn't find anyting appropriate. Does atactl fail because the
disk is a SATA disk behind an ahci controller, thus appearing as a
SCSI-disk? Or am I overlooking something?

After that, I installed smartctl from packages. This failed too, but in
a bigger way. This is what happened:

# smartctl -a /dev/sd0c
smartctl version 5.33 [x86_64-unknown-openbsd4.2] Copyright (C) 2002-4 Bruce
Allen
Home page is http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/

Device: ATA ST910021AS Version: 4.06
sd0(

The last line (starting with sd0) was printed by the kernel. I didn't get a
prompt back, instead the machine just resetted after some seconds. No
panic, no ddb, it just resetted. (All sysctl settings were default, so
ddb.panic was 1)

Invoking smartctl with the -d ata option resulted in a similar message
atactl gave: "Inappropriate ioctl for device".

What can I do to diagnose and/or (help) fix this?

Thanks,
