The ports tree is there for a reason.

this is wrong, it should be -pthread.> /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lexpat in 3.9 this was in a separate port. In 4.2 it's in xbase. In -current it's in base. I strongly advise upgrading to 4.2 and use ports/packages.
