Try the 'ls' command in boot(8) I think like:
ls hd0b:
ls hd0b:/bsd
and see if it can read your filesystem.
Oh, and it sounds like a BAD(tm) idea to use
hd0b as a root partition. The b partition is
reserved for swap. Use d instead, maybe.
