I suppose the question that must be answered is: to watch hi-def movies, as in have the hardware do the conversions, etc, do you need 3D accel support in the driver, or will 2D hardware accel support do everything you need. I think the need for the propriatory drivers is for 3D for most cards. You'd have to check the man page for the different drivers to see what chips have 2D hardware accel. Doug.
