More to the point, have a working knowledge of ed. Had a royal PITA the other day when I misspelled "softdep" in the /usr line in fstab, and didn't know how to use ed.
Most modern OSs (with the exception of Windows, assuming you wish to lump it in with that category) include a usable editor.
Notepad? edlin?
