I did the first of our upgrades, using serial port/bsd.rd.
Did this a few times before, but this time was different, and locked out
of the serial port!?
My first observation was with "You also need to use vipw(8) to edit the
password files and your favorite editor to change ". I couldn't for my
life get this going properly, [I do everything with vi, so vi is not the
problem].
Searching for hoststat brought me to a different line, manually editing
screwed up the display. I sftp-ed to the box, and everything was fine.
After the next reboot (bsd.mp), the serial console showed everything
starting, all daemons, until date. Only the logon froze completely.
I was afraid, the whole machine (I have no access) had panicked, but no,
sftp was fine and everything else.
Now everything looks fine, only serial console is not working.
Of course not, my fault.
[But it would have been good - maybe can still be done - to add the
warning into the upgrade guide, that when you access through serial
console, one locks oneself out by following the guide slavishly.]
