After giving some extra thought it appears that with older computer my main concern should not to be disk performance but network. em0 does there according to the

# dd if=/dev/zero .. | nc 1.2.3.4 1010

some poor 16-20 MBait/s while the other side is capable of around 40 MBait/s with some third, generation newer computer.
